The Appian Way itself dates to 312 BC, when the Roman censor Appius Claudius Caecus — the same official who built Rome's first aqueduct, the Aqua Appia — laid it down as a military supply route during the Samnite Wars. It originally ran from Rome to Capua, and was later extended over more than 350 miles to the port of Brindisi, making it the Roman world's first great paved highway. Sections of the original stone surface are still visible and walkable more than 2,300 years later.
The Catacombs of St. Callixtus began life in the mid-2nd century and grew into the official cemetery of the Church of Rome, with roughly 12 miles of galleries spread across four levels, some more than 20 meters underground. Its most revered chamber, the Crypt of the Popes, was the burial place of nine third-century pontiffs and became known as "the little Vatican." The site was lost to memory for centuries before archaeologist Giovanni Battista de Rossi rediscovered it in 1854, a find that effectively founded the modern study of early Christian archaeology.
With hotel pickup built into this private tour, the morning is uncomplicated: no meeting point to find, no public bus schedule to work around before descending into galleries that have held Christian burials since before Constantine legalized the faith.
