The Castelli Romani towns all sit on the rim of an ancient volcanic system, and Lake Albano — one of the day's stops — is literally a flooded volcanic crater, as is the nearby Lake Nemi. That geology is also why the soil here produces such distinctive wine: grape cultivation around Frascati has been documented since the 5th century BC, and Frascati itself became one of Italy's first four wines ever awarded DOC status, back in 1966.
Ariccia, another of the towns on this route, built its own culinary identity on porchetta — herb-stuffed, slow-roasted whole pork with a production history going back roughly a thousand years, now protected with an IGP (geographical indication) designation. Albano Laziale, right next door, shares the same volcanic crater rim and Roman-era roots.
Castel Gandolfo, the day's best-known stop, has belonged to the Vatican since 1596; Pope Urban VIII became the first pope to actually spend time there in 1626, and the estate — 55 hectares including gardens, a forest and a working dairy farm — is larger than Vatican City itself. Seeing several real Castelli Romani towns together in one day, rather than just the famous papal one, is the point of this particular itinerary.
