For centuries, Castel Gandolfo's Apostolic Palace was entirely off-limits — Vatican property since 1596, used privately by popes as a summer retreat since Urban VIII first stayed there in 1626. That changed under Pope Francis, who never actually spent a night at the 17th-century lakeside residence himself: he opened the palace gardens to the public in 2014, a portrait gallery inside the palace in 2015, and finally the private papal apartments themselves as a public museum on October 21, 2016, letting visitors into rooms hung with purple-and-gold damask for the first time in the residence's history.
Frascati's own wine story runs on a separate, longer timeline. Vines have been cultivated here since the 5th century BC, and Frascati became one of Italy's first four DOC wines in 1966; more recently, in 2011, the region's top tiers — Frascati Superiore and Cannellino di Frascati — were elevated to DOCG status, Italy's highest quality classification.
