About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with real VIP entry to the genuine Baths of Caracalla. This is a private tour for your group only, with genuine VIP entry to the real Baths of Caracalla, one of ancient Rome's largest surviving bath complexes.

The Baths of Caracalla were built fast for their scale — construction ran roughly from 212 to 216 or 217 AD under the emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla, reportedly using around 9,000 workers, though the full complex with all its decoration wasn't actually finished until 235 AD. At their peak they were Rome's second-largest public bath complex after the Baths of Diocletian, covering some 25 hectares and able to hold an estimated 1,600 bathers at once inside a building roughly 750 feet long — with a central cold-room, the frigidarium, spanning nearly 184 feet beneath vaulted ceilings over 100 feet high.

The baths stayed in continuous use for more than 300 years, finally falling out of operation only in 537 AD, when the Ostrogoths besieging Rome deliberately cut the Aqua Antoniniana — the dedicated aqueduct built specifically to supply this one complex — leaving it with no water at all. The ruins were later quarried for building stone for centuries afterward, with marble taken from the site reportedly used as far away as Pisa Cathedral. VIP entry here means skipping the queue into one of the largest surviving Roman public buildings of its kind, rather than touring it alongside the general crowds.
