The Capitoline Museums began in 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of ancient bronzes — including the Capitoline Wolf, the statue known as the Camillus, the Boy with Thorn, and fragments of a colossal statue of Domitian — to the people of Rome. That gift makes this the world's oldest public museum, though it wasn't formally opened to all visitors until 1734, under Pope Clement XII.
The galleries occupy three connected buildings around Michelangelo's elliptical piazza, designed in 1538: the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the Palazzo Nuovo, and the ancient Tabularium, Rome's former state archive, whose terrace still looks straight down onto the Roman Forum.
Among the Baroque works on view is Gian Lorenzo Bernini's marble bust of Medusa, carved in the 1640s and unusual for showing the Gorgon mid-transformation rather than already slain — Bernini himself called it a meditation on sculpture's power to "petrify" with sheer skill. Nearby stands the Statue of Carlo Barberini, begun in 1630 as a joint work between Bernini and Alessandro Algardi, the two leading sculptors of papal Rome working side by side.
