Assisi's Basilica of San Francesco went up fast by medieval standards — construction began almost immediately after Francis's canonization, with Pope Gregory IX laying the foundation stone on July 17, 1228, barely two years after Francis's death. The lower church was finished by 1230, in time for Francis's body to be moved there in a solemn procession that May, and the whole complex — designed under the supervision of Brother Elia, one of Francis's own early followers — was complete by 1253. Its lower church frescoes, painted by Cimabue and Giotto among others, are considered foundational works of early Italian painting.
Francis himself was born in Assisi around 1181–1182, the son of a prosperous cloth merchant, and spent his youth chasing military glory before a spell as a prisoner of war in Perugia at around 19 changed his direction entirely. He founded the Franciscan order of mendicant friars in 1210 and is recorded as the first known Christian to bear the stigmata — the wounds associated with Christ's crucifixion.
Orvieto, the second stop, sits on its own dramatic tufa-rock plateau a couple of hours away — a different kind of Umbrian landmark, built up rather than stripped back over the centuries, with its famous Duomo begun in 1290 to house a relic from the 1263 Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena. Pairing Assisi's religious history with Orvieto's medieval cityscape gives a single day a real spread across Umbria's two most recognizable towns.
