About This Tour

A private day tour to the Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle, with a real picnic included as part of the day. This private day tour visits the Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle, with a genuine picnic included as part of the itinerary - a distinct inclusion not found on the standard Blarney/Cork combo tour.

Cahir Castle is one of Ireland's largest and best-preserved medieval castles, standing on a naturally defensible rocky island in the River Suir. The Anglo-Norman Butler family began substantially expanding it in the early 13th century, on a site that had already held an earlier stone castle built in 1142, and much of what visitors see today reflects further remodeling the Butlers carried out between the 15th and 17th centuries.

The Rock of Cashel, the day's other major stop, was traditionally the seat of the Kings of Munster for centuries before the Norman invasion, and legend holds that Saint Patrick baptized King Aenghus here in the 5th century. Cormac's Chapel, consecrated in 1134, still shows the distinctive Germanic architectural touches brought by craftsmen sent from Regensburg - twin towers found nowhere else in Ireland.

The genuine, disclosed picnic included on this tour is the real point of difference from the standard Blarney/Cork combo day - a relaxed, unhurried meal somewhere scenic between the two historic sites, rather than a rushed stop at a roadside café.
