West Bay Beach runs roughly a mile along the northwestern tip of Roatán, the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, and it owes its postcard looks to a quirk of geography as much as to its powdery white sand. Because the beach faces north while the prevailing trade winds blow in from the south, the coral reef that runs just offshore is sheltered from the chop that roughens up more exposed stretches of coastline — the water stays calm and clear for most of the year, with sea temperatures holding steady between about 78°F and 84°F. The reef itself comes within a few yards of the shore in places, which is part of why West Bay is routinely ranked among the best beaches in the Caribbean rather than just on Roatán.
West Bay's current reputation as a tourist destination is a fairly recent development. For most of the 20th century the area was difficult to reach — there was no road connecting it to the rest of the island until around 1990, so visitors arrived mostly by boat. Before that, the coastline had passed through a long sequence of hands: indigenous groups including the Paya, Pech, and Tawahka fished and traded along it; Spanish explorers claimed the island in the early 1500s but largely left it alone because of its rugged terrain; English and Dutch pirates used Roatán's coves through the 1600s and 1700s; and the British brought Garifuna settlers from St. Vincent in the late 1700s, adding the Afro-Caribbean influence still visible in island culture today. Honduras didn't gain full control of the island until 1861. Once the road finally opened up West Bay in the 1990s, the beach clubs, dive shops, and resorts that now line the sand began to follow.
This particular tour strips the day down to its essentials: a private vehicle gets you there and back without the waiting or route-sharing of a group shuttle, and once you arrive, the beach club itself takes care of the practical side of a beach day — real shade, a place to change and rinse off, and a Wi-Fi signal if you want it. Everything beyond that, from how long you stay in the water to whether you order lunch at the club's restaurant, is left entirely up to you rather than built into a fixed itinerary.
