Roatán is the largest of Honduras's three Bay Islands (alongside Utila and Guanaja), stretching roughly 35 to 48 miles long depending on how the measurement is taken, with barely five miles of width at its broadest point — a long, narrow island that makes a coastal sail genuinely scenic rather than just a loop around a single bay.
The clear water this route is known for isn't incidental: Roatán sits directly along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-longest barrier reef on the planet after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It runs roughly 700 miles along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, and the stretch off Roatán's south shore supports more than 65 species of stony coral and upwards of 500 fish species — part of why the water here reads as some of the clearest sailing conditions in the region.
Oak Ridge, the route's eastern destination, has earned the nickname "the Venice of Roatán" for a real reason — much of the village is built directly on stilts over its own natural harbor, with pastel-painted houses standing above the water rather than beside it. The settlement traces back roughly 170 years to its first documented inhabitant, and the surrounding cay was historically valued as a source of oak timber for ship masts during the 1700s, when pirate and merchant vessels alike worked this stretch of coast — which is likely where the name comes from.
Along the way, the route passes near Little French Key, a small private cay off Roatán's shore that's developed into its own day-resort destination, with free-roaming animals and a mix of beaches popular with cruise visitors — a notable landmark to sail toward and past even on a route built around Oak Ridge as the main stop.
