Roatan Island Brewing Company exists because of a chance discovery. Ilias Maier, a local hotel and resort manager, bought the property that would become the brewery and realized only afterward that it sat on top of the island's largest freshwater aquifer — exactly the kind of resource a brewhouse needs. Construction began in 2015, and the result is Roatán's first dedicated brew house, tucked into the Palmetto Valley well away from the coastal tourist strip.
The setting is the point as much as the beer is: a jungle-interior brewery reached along Palmetto Bay Road, with the valley's forest cover standing in for the usual beach backdrop most island day tours offer. It's a genuinely different pocket of Roatán from the postcard coastline, and the brewery leans into that — open-air tasting space, local artisan markets on occasion, and the kind of unhurried, low-key atmosphere that comes from being somewhere most cruise-day itineraries never reach.
On the beer side, the brewery uses traditional brewing methods with locally sourced ingredients, and its flagship is a Roatán Pale Ale brewed to reflect the island's own character rather than imitate a mainland style. The rotating lineup typically spans a dozen-plus styles at any given time — lagers and ales through to porters, browns, and even a gose — giving a tasting flight real range rather than just variations on one recipe.
