Rio's Metropolitan Cathedral is hard to mistake for anything else — a cone-shaped concrete structure designed by architect Edgar Fonseca and built between 1964 and 1979, drawing visibly on Mayan pyramid forms. It stands about 75 meters tall on the outside (64 meters internally), with a base roughly 106 meters across, and was designed without interior columns so the space could hold up to 20,000 people standing.
The Sambadrome, which this tour passes, was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and built in just 120 days ahead of its 1984 opening, commissioned by then-governor Leonel Brizola to give Rio's Carnival samba school parades a permanent home — before that, the parades ran down Avenida Presidente Vargas with temporary bleachers built and dismantled every year. The parade ground itself stretches 570 meters long.
Christ the Redeemer, the tour's other major stop, is often described as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World — a title it won in a 2007 global popular-vote campaign run by the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation, not an official UNESCO or scientific designation (UNESCO itself has stated it has no connection to that campaign). Rio's broader landscape, including Corcovado and the statue atop it, does hold a genuine UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2012 as part of "Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes." The statue itself, an Art Deco work completed in 1931, stands about 30 meters tall on an 8-meter pedestal.
The day finishes at Sugarloaf Mountain, reached by the cable car that's run across Guanabara Bay since 1912, for views back over the route you've just covered.
