Sugarloaf Mountain and the smaller Morro da Urca beside it are both granite-gneiss outcrops — geologists call this kind of steep, dome-like rock formation a bornhardt, or inselberg — dating back roughly 560 to 600 million years, to the era when the ancient supercontinent Gondwana was taking shape. Sugarloaf itself rises about 396 meters (1,299 feet) above the bay; Urca, the cable car's midway stop, reaches about 220 meters.
The cable car ride up is done in two stages: the first car carries you from Praia Vermelha to the top of Morro da Urca, with Botafogo and the curve of Guanabara Bay opening up below; the second continues on to Sugarloaf's summit itself. Both legs run on a system that's operated, in various rebuilt forms, since the original Bondinho opened on October 27, 1912 — one of the oldest cable car lines in the world.
Because the tour is timed for sunset and led by a professional photographer, the stop at Urca and the final summit both double as vantage points for the kind of low, warm light that's hardest to capture on a standard sightseeing schedule, with the photos from the day compiled into a digital album you receive afterward.
