Most visitors experience Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain by looking up at them. A private helicopter flips that entirely, giving you a few minutes of looking down on Rio's defining landmarks from a vantage point almost nobody gets — and one the city's geography makes unusually dramatic, since the mountains, bay, and beaches here are packed so tightly together that an aerial loop can cover the whole postcard view of Rio in well under an hour.
Rio's sightseeing helicopters typically operate out of one of two heliports — Heliponto da Lagoa, on the edge of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, or a pad at the base of Sugarloaf — and fly a corridor that threads between Christ the Redeemer's summit on Corcovado, the granite dome of Sugarloaf and its cable car line, and the curve of Guanabara Bay. From the air you see the 710-meter Corcovado peak and the statue's full outstretched arms at eye level rather than craning upward from the viewing platform below, plus the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema laid out as a single continuous shoreline and the green canopy of Tijuca Forest rolling right up to the edges of dense neighborhoods. Exact routing on any given flight depends on weather and air traffic coordination with Santos Dumont Airport, which sits right downtown, but the core landmarks are a fixture of nearly every Rio helicopter flight.
Because this is a private charter rather than a shared seat on a scheduled flight, the group flies alone — no waiting for other passengers to fill the cabin, and no sharing the view with strangers snapping their own photos over your shoulder.
