Cardrona, one of this tour's real stops, grew up almost overnight after gold was discovered there in 1863. Of the handful of buildings that once made up the township, only the Cardrona Hotel — originally opened as the Empire Hotel the same year — still stands from that era, making it one of New Zealand's oldest surviving hotels and, today, one of its most photographed. By the 1890s the gold had largely run out and only the hotel, one other pub, two stores, and a blacksmith remained of the original settlement.
Cromwell's own gold-rush history took a very different turn. The town's original 19th-century business district, built where the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers meet, now lies underwater: when the Clyde Dam was completed in 1992, the valley behind it was flooded to create Lake Dunstan, an artificial reservoir on the Clutha River, submerging the old town centre entirely. Rather than lose that history, locals spent years painstakingly relocating dozens of historic buildings — some moved whole, others rebuilt stone by stone — into a historic precinct on higher ground above the new shoreline, where buildings dating from 1860 to 1900 are still open to walk through today.
Lake Dunstan itself is worth noting as you drive its shore: it's a man-made hydro lake, not a natural one, created specifically by that 1992 dam rather than shaped by glaciers like most of the region's other lakes.
From there the drive continues on to Wanaka itself, a lakeside town distinct from Queenstown in its own right, with real time built into this confirmed private, fully customizable itinerary to explore at your own pace rather than a fixed group schedule.
