This full day covers more ground than a single Skippers Canyon tour, and that range is part of what makes it work for photography — the narrow, hand-cut gold-mining road of Skippers Canyon looks nothing like the wide, glacially carved basin around Lake Wakatipu, and the Remarkables Range rising almost straight up from the lake's edge is a different subject again.
Lake Wakatipu itself has a real, measurable oddity that's easy to miss unless you know to look for it: the lake's water level genuinely rises and falls by about 200 millimetres every 26.7 minutes, a natural rhythm called a seiche. Māori tradition explains the pulse with a legend that a giant lies sleeping in the lake's bed, and that the rise and fall of the water is his breathing — a story that long predates the modern scientific explanation but describes the same real phenomenon.
The wider Wakatipu Basin around Queenstown is also genuine Lord of the Rings filming territory from the original trilogy's 1999–2000 shoot, with the Glenorchy area in particular — including nearby Paradise — standing in for scenes set in Lothlórien and at Isengard. This tour's own stops will vary with the day and the light, but the region's real film history is there to work with, alongside the historic gold mines and heritage sites left over from the Shotover gold rush of the 1860s.
Nine hours gives genuine room to actually wait for good light rather than ticking off stops on a schedule — which matters more here than almost anywhere else near Queenstown, since the canyon, the lake, and the mountains each photograph completely differently depending on the time of day.
