Of the four real route themes on offer, the Māori mythology and legends option draws on one of the best-known stories in the region: that Lake Wakatipu itself was formed when a giant lay down in a hollow and died there, and that the lake's distinctive, zigzagging shape is the outline of his resting body. The story also explains something that's genuinely measurable today — Lake Wakatipu's water level actually rises and falls by around 200 millimetres every 26.7 minutes, a real phenomenon called a seiche, which the legend poetically attributes to the giant's breathing.
The Glenorchy and Lake Whakatipu option heads to the far end of the lake, about 45 kilometres from Queenstown, where the Dart and Rees Rivers meet the water. Glenorchy itself started life as a small pastoral settlement — it takes its name from Glen Orchy in Scotland — and the Paradise area nearby is documented as a real Lord of the Rings filming location from the original trilogy's 1999–2000 shoot, standing in for scenes set in Lothlórien and at Isengard.
The Skippers Canyon option, by contrast, is pure 1860s gold-rush history: gold was first found at nearby Arthurs Point in November 1862, and the narrow road into the canyon was cut by hand into the schist cliffs in the 1880s to reach the goldfields that followed. Having a local guide — rather than a fixed, one-size-fits-all script — means the route and the stories told along the way can genuinely shift to match whichever of these four themes your group actually wants more of.
Because every route starts and ends with the same private 4WD and the same guide, you're not choosing between four separate products so much as choosing where the day's real emphasis falls — on the landscape's Māori origins, its Hollywood history, its goldfields, or simply the wider Whakatipu basin itself.
