Before this tour reaches Milford Sound itself, it passes through the Homer Tunnel — a single-lane passage blasted through solid rock that took 18 years to build, from 1935 to 1953. Work began during the Great Depression with just five men using picks and wheelbarrows, as part of a relief-work scheme, and the project was repeatedly set back: three workers died in avalanches during construction, World War II halted work for years, and a 1945 avalanche destroyed the almost-finished eastern portal outright. The tunnel runs 1.2 kilometres from an eastern elevation of 945 metres, descending at roughly a 1:10 gradient to the western side — the steep drop you'll genuinely feel on the way through.
That history is part of why this route rewards a tour built around comfort and flexibility rather than a fixed group schedule: it's a long way to Milford Sound from Queenstown, and the drive itself — through the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel — is as much a part of the day as the fiord at the end of it. Door-to-door pickup and a genuinely private, confirmed-exclusive vehicle let you set your own pace through the photo stops rather than keeping to someone else's timetable.
Once through the tunnel, the premium small-boat cruise included on this tour takes you in close beneath Mitre Peak, which rises 1,692 metres almost straight out of the water at the fiord's edge. Milford Sound is also genuinely one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth, averaging around 6,412 millimetres of rain a year — which feeds dozens of temporary waterfalls down the cliff faces on top of the sound's permanent ones, so even a wetter day here tends to add drama rather than take it away.
You'll likely hear the claim that Rudyard Kipling once called Milford Sound "the eighth wonder of the world." It's repeated constantly in local tourism material, but no original source for the quote has ever been produced — it's best treated as a well-worn piece of local lore rather than a documented fact.
