Te Anau, the lakeside town this tour passes through en route, is the real gateway to Fiordland National Park and sits roughly two hours' drive from Queenstown — a logical staging point for several Lord of the Rings location shoots in the wider region, since so much of the surrounding wilderness doubled for Middle-earth.
Mavora Lakes, further north again down a long gravel road, has one of the better-documented dual filming roles in the trilogy: North Mavora Lake stood in for the Anduin River as the Fellowship paddled south in their canoes, while South Mavora Lake was used for Nen Hithoel, the lake shore where the Fellowship made its final camp before Boromir's death and the group's breaking apart. A stretch near the lakes was also used for the edge of Fangorn Forest — the scene of Aragorn discovering the hobbits' trail and Gimli's "what madness drove them in there" line — though the deeper forest interiors seen later in The Two Towers were actually filmed at Snowdon Forest, in Fiordland, rather than at Mavora Lakes itself.
Worth being honest about: the "Dead Marshes" scenes most viewers remember are usually tied to Kepler Mire, a distinct wetland near Te Anau rather than Mavora Lakes, with some of Frodo, Sam and Gollum's close-up shots completed later on a built set near Wellington. If marsh-style scenery features on this route, it's most likely via that separate Te Anau-area wetland rather than the lakes themselves — a nuance that's easy for any tour description to blur, given how close the real sites sit to one another on a map.
