The Library Room this tour visits is a private, reserved tasting space set among the barrel racks inside Gibbston Valley Winery's wine cave — New Zealand's largest — away from the day-visitor groups who tour the main cave on a set schedule. It's a genuinely different experience from a standard cave walkthrough: a seated tasting among several hundred barrels of maturing Pinot Noir, rather than a quick pass-through stop.
From the cave, the tour's real second stop, Old Cromwell, has one of Central Otago's more remarkable town histories. When the Clyde Dam was completed in 1992, the valley behind it was deliberately flooded to create Lake Dunstan — which meant Cromwell's actual original 19th-century business district, at the junction of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers, now sits underwater. Rather than lose that history entirely, locals moved many of the town's historic buildings to higher ground before the flooding, and rebuilt others that couldn't be moved stone-by-stone and plank-by-plank. What stands today along the new lake's edge is a real heritage precinct of buildings dating from 1860 to 1900, reflecting Cromwell's gold-mining and pioneering past.
Arrowtown, the tour's third real stop, traces back to the same 1862 gold rush that built much of this part of Central Otago — the town itself was founded that year after a rich strike by prospector William Fox drew a rush of miners to the district. Its well-preserved main street still reflects that gold-era layout rather than a reconstructed or themed version of it.
Taken together with the exclusive, confirmed-private format and specialist guide, the tour's real draw is less about any one landmark than the combination: a hands-on cave experience most visitors never see, a town whose own historic centre is literally underwater nearby, and a gold-rush settlement still standing largely as it was.
