Paradise is a real place, not just evocative tour-marketing language — a small, sparsely populated locality about 20 kilometres past Glenorchy, at the literal end of the public road, surrounded by the foothills of the Southern Alps. Its name's exact origin is genuinely disputed: the area was first recorded as "Paradise Flat," and while one popular explanation credits an abundance of paradise shelducks once found there, that account isn't universally accepted by local historians, some of whom simply attribute the name to the valley's own obvious beauty. Either way, Paradise remains one of the most photographed stretches of road in the Queenstown Lakes district.
Beyond the scenery, Glenorchy and Paradise together function as the real trailhead for some of New Zealand's most serious back-country walking — the Routeburn Track, one of the country's official "Great Walks," along with the Rees-Dart Track and the Greenstone-Caples Track, all begin from roads branching off near here. That's a large part of why the area has long drawn trampers as much as day-trip sightseers.
The route out from Queenstown also passes Bennetts Bluff, a lookout with wide views up the lake toward Mount Earnslaw's glaciers and Mount Aspiring National Park, and 12 Mile Delta, a Department of Conservation campground set on a river delta framed by Mount Crichton — a genuinely scenic stop in its own right, and historically one of several wild river-delta landscapes around Queenstown used for Lord of the Rings location shooting, though this particular tour is framed around the real scenery itself rather than film tourism.
