Paradise is a genuine, specific place — not just a flattering name chosen for marketing — a small locality about 20 kilometres past Glenorchy, at the literal end of the public road, in a wide valley ringed by the Humboldt and Forbes mountain ranges. Its own name history is murkier than the scenery suggests: first recorded as "Paradise Flat," with the common explanation (an abundance of paradise shelducks) not universally accepted by local historians, who sometimes attribute it more simply to the valley's obvious beauty.
Because the final stretches of track into Paradise's back country run across private farmland and conservation land, access for most visitors is on foot only. A licensed Department of Conservation concession is what allows this tour's own 4WD vehicle off the public road and into terrain that would otherwise be out of reach for a half-day visit — the practical reason this operator can offer a genuine off-road experience here rather than just a roadside photo stop.
Paradise's film history is real and specific: it doubled for Parth Galen and the entrance to Lothlorien in The Fellowship of the Ring, and later for the exterior of Beorn's house in The Hobbit trilogy. That pairing of real wilderness and real production history, combined with a guide who shoots photography for a living, is the actual value of a tour built around slower, photography-paced stops rather than a standard scenic drive.
