The name Qualicum comes from a Pentlatch term reported to mean 'where the dog salmon (chum) run'. The town lies within the traditional territory of the Qualicum First Nation.
European settlers arrived from the 1880s; a road reached Parksville from Nanaimo in 1886 and extended to Qualicum in 1894. In the early twentieth century a railway official, H. E. Beasley, backed the Merchants Trust and Trading Company, which laid out the town and built the golf links and the Qualicum Beach Hotel in 1913.
During the First World War the hotel served as a hospital, and the Prince of Wales visited it in 1918. A walk through the old streets with a local historian ties these layers to the buildings still standing.
