Punta del Este's reputation as South America's most exclusive beach resort grew after it was declared a resort city in 1907, and the coast east of Montevideo keeps changing character as you drive: busy peninsula, then the quieter beaches toward Manantiales, which lies between Punta del Este and the more rustic José Ignacio.
