About This Tour
A private day trip to Punta del Este, Uruguay's famous beach resort, covering Playa Mansa and Playa Brava, the iconic La Mano sculpture, the yacht harbor's sea lions, Punta Ballena, and Casapueblo. Punta del Este sits on a narrow peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, and the two sides are noticeably different: Playa Mansa on the estuary side has calm, gentler water, while Playa Brava faces open ocean with waves and cooler water. The town was declared a resort city in 1907. On Playa Brava stands La Mano, five giant fingers rising from the sand, made by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal in February 1982 during an international sculpture event.
Casapueblo, at Punta Ballena about 13 km along the coast, began as artist Carlos Páez Vilaró's summer home and workshop; he took inspiration from the hornero bird, which builds its nest from mud. It now houses a museum, gallery, cafeteria, and hotel. Off the coast, Isla de Lobos holds one of the largest colonies of sea lions and fur seals in the region (a 2005 census counted over 1,500 sea lions and about 250,000 fur seals); the harbor's resident sea lions are a smaller, easier sight.
