The Zona Romántica is Puerto Vallarta's original downtown core, and walking it on foot — rather than driving through — is really the only way to appreciate why it earned the name. Beyond the cobblestone streets and courtyard cafés, this neighborhood, centered on Olas Altas beach and Playa de los Muertos, has built a genuine, decades-deep identity as one of Mexico's most openly LGBTQ+-friendly districts. Queer travelers first began discovering Puerto Vallarta in the 1960s, the neighborhood's gay scene took root through the 1970s and '80s, and by 1990 the Zona Romántica had its own established infrastructure of gay-owned bars, galleries, and guesthouses — a walkable identity that's since been formally recognized, with the city's tourism trust committing funding toward branding the area an official 'Friendly District,' complete with Pride-themed crosswalks and inclusive signage.
The walk ends at the Vallarta Botanical Garden, a genuine conservation institution rather than a staged attraction. Founded in 2004 by Bob Price, together with his mother Betty Price and local co-founder Jesús Reyes, the garden opened to the public the following year on what had previously been degraded cattle pasture. Today it's a non-profit home to more than 1,200 plant species and hybrids, with a particular focus on the native flora of the region's Tropical Dry Forest Biome — a specific, biodiverse ecosystem found along this stretch of Mexico's Pacific coast. The garden has also built a real reputation in orchid conservation specifically, running an experimental micropropagation laboratory (started in 2009 under Jesús Reyes) dedicated to reproducing native and ornamental orchid species for long-term conservation.
Along the way, the route crosses the Cuale River by its pedestrian suspension bridge, one of several crossings linking downtown to the leafy Isla Río Cuale sitting in the middle of the river — a small, jungle-canopied island known locally for its handicraft stalls and open-air cafés, and a natural, unhurried midpoint on a walk that's as much about pace as destination.
