Puerto Vallarta's Malecón runs a little over a mile along the Pacific-facing waterfront, roughly from the Hotel Rosita area in the north down past the Playa Los Muertos Pier in the south. Its oldest sections date back to the 1930s, and the boardwalk was extensively rebuilt in a 2011 renovation that widened the walkway and planted around 300 foxtail palms along its length for shade — a detail that matters more on a bike than on foot, since it keeps a good stretch of the ride genuinely shaded rather than exposed the whole way.
What sets the Malecón apart from most waterfront promenades is its public art: roughly 20 sculptures line the route, most privately funded by local businesses or individuals and each taking anywhere from one to three years to complete from concept to installation, with work from a range of Mexican artists. Covering that collection on a bike means seeing the full stretch — and the Cathedral, lighthouse, and pier landmarks along it — in well under the time a walking tour would take, while still slow enough to actually take the pieces in rather than cycling past at speed.
Because this is a private tour for just your own group, the pace is set around your family or friends rather than a mixed group of strangers, with the guide filling in the history and architecture along the way and stopping wherever something catches your attention.
