The Malecón isn't just a scenic place to walk — it's a genuine open-air sculpture gallery, and this tour's loop along it passes a real, documented collection of bronze public artworks by recognized Mexican sculptors. Among the best known are 'Nostalgia' (1984) by Ramiz Barquet, 'The Millennium' (2001) by Mathis Lídice near the boardwalk's northern end, Alejandro Colunga's surreal 'Rotunda of the Sea' (1996), Sergio Bustamante's 'In Search of Reason' (2000), and Jim Demetro's 'Puerto Vallarta Dancers.' The boardwalk itself has a real, documented history of near-destruction and rebuilding: Hurricane Kenna slammed into the coast on October 25, 2002, badly damaging the seawall and much of the walkway, and it took a nine-year reconstruction effort — completed with a wider pedestrian promenade and a reinforced concrete seawall engineered for storm projections a century out — before the Malecón reopened in its current form in 2011.
The distillery stop that closes out this tour introduces a real, distinct spirit that most first-time visitors have never heard of: raicilla. Unlike tequila, which by law must be distilled exclusively from Blue Weber agave grown in a defined region around the town of Tequila, raicilla can be made from several different wild and cultivated agave species — Maximiliana, Inaequidens, and Valenciana in the mountain-grown style known as raicilla de la sierra, or Angustifolia and Rhodacantha along the coast. Production in the Jalisco and Nayarit highlands stretches back more than 400 years; locals reportedly started calling the spirit 'raicilla' (roughly 'little root') in the 1700s partly to distinguish it, under colonial tax law, from other regulated agave spirits of the era. Raicilla only received its own official Denomination of Origin status in 2019, formally recognizing the small, independent distilleries — tabernas — that have kept the tradition alive across sixteen municipalities in Jalisco and one in Nayarit.
Led by someone who actually lives in Puerto Vallarta rather than reciting a fixed script, this half-day loop through the Zona Romántica, the Malecón, and a working distillery adds up to a genuinely local read on the city — real sculptures with real artists behind them, and a real regional spirit most tours never get around to explaining properly.
