The cave system beneath the hills around Cuetzalán is a real, substantial piece of Mexican geology, not a small roadside attraction — the Grutas de Cuetzalán network has over 100 kilometers of mapped passages discovered since systematic exploration began in the 1970s, and it's considered a candidate for one of the most extensive cave systems in Latin America. The specific cave used on this tour, known locally as the Gruta con río subterráneo Chichicazapan, is built around a genuine underground river rather than a dry show cave, which is exactly what makes the two-hour walk-and-swim route possible: visitors wade through roughly a meter of water for around 500 meters of passage, passing through one deeper pool used as a natural swimming stop, with caving gear and life jackets provided for the route.
This is a working adventure cave, not a lit, paved tourist circuit — expect real rock, real water, and a guide leading the way through a passage shaped entirely by the underground river that still runs through it. It's a genuinely different kind of Cuetzalán experience from a standard town walk, and it's the reason this specific itinerary exists as its own tour rather than an add-on to Voyzo's other Cuetzalán options.
The coffee and liquor tasting that follows, back in town, draws on the same real coffee-growing tradition that defines the Cuetzalán area — much of it channeled through the Tosepan Titataniske fair-trade cooperative, which represents local Indigenous growers across the Sierra Norte. After a morning spent underground, the tasting is as much a chance to dry off and warm up as it is to sample the region's genuine agricultural product.
