Torcello is older than Venice itself. Settlers first arrived in the lagoon's marshes around the 5th to 6th century, fleeing invasions on the mainland, and the island's Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta — still standing today — was founded in 639 AD, making it the oldest religious building in the entire lagoon. For a few centuries afterward, Torcello was a genuine trading and ecclesiastical center with its own bishop, well established before St. Mark's Basilica in Venice was even built, back when the lagoon's balance of power still ran the other way entirely.
That prominence didn't last. Plague, the gradual silting of its canals, and the malaria that followed eventually pushed almost everyone away; today Torcello's year-round population is in the single digits, and walking its quiet paths feels closer to visiting a ruin than a living town, with grazing sheep now easily outnumbering the handful of year-round residents on much of the island's open ground.
