About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, a real full-day round trip to genuine Vienna — Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna State Opera, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and Hofburg Palace. This is a private tour for your group only. A real full-day round trip reaches genuine Vienna — Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna State Opera, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and Hofburg Palace.

The land under Schönbrunn Palace was bought by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II back in 1569 and used first as a hunting ground, before the buildings on it were destroyed during the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683. Emperor Leopold I commissioned its reconstruction in 1696 from the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, originally conceived as a grand hunting lodge rather than a full residence — the central section was finished and occupied by 1700.

The palace most visitors recognize today is really the work of one later ruler. Maria Theresa, who received Schönbrunn from her father, Emperor Charles VI, drove a major expansion from roughly 1743 to 1780 under the architect Nikolaus Pacassi, turning it from a hunting retreat into a genuine imperial residence and the real centre of Austrian political and social life for the rest of the Habsburg era. The palace today holds 1,441 rooms in total, decorated with frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and gilded ornamentation, though only a small fraction of those rooms are actually open to the public on a standard visit.

This full-day round trip from Prague pairs Schönbrunn with the rest of central Vienna's own landmarks — the Vienna State Opera, one of the world's most famous opera houses, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and Hofburg Palace, the Habsburgs' winter residence — giving travelers a real, complete day in a genuinely different imperial capital rather than just the one palace.
