The Vltava River is the one fact that actually orients you in Prague faster than any map. It's the reason the city is laid out the way it is, splitting the Castle and Malá Strana on one bank from Old Town and New Town on the other, with Charles Bridge — built after Prague's earlier stone bridge, the Judith Bridge, was destroyed by a flood in 1342 — still the oldest surviving crossing linking them. Once you can picture that single river and its handful of bridges, Prague's layout stops feeling confusing.
On the castle side, Malá Strana — the Lesser Town — was actually its own separate, independently chartered town from 1257 until it was eventually folded into greater Prague. Badly damaged by occupying Swedish troops near the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648, it was rebuilt almost entirely in the Baroque style that still gives its quiet, palace-lined streets their distinctly unhurried character compared with the busier Old Town across the river.
None of that history gets a deep dive on this particular tour — the whole point of a two-hour orientation is to get your bearings, not exhaust every landmark — so your guide uses it to point out where the real highlights sit relative to each other and flag the genuinely practical stuff: which neighborhoods, which direction, what's walkable, so the rest of your stay runs smoother.
