Salzburg carries two separate, genuine claims to fame, and both are real reasons travelers make the trip. It's the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born there in 1756 — his childhood home on Getreidegasse is preserved as a museum, and the composer's presence is woven through the city's festivals, concert halls, and gift shops alike.
Salzburg is also, independently, the real filming location of The Sound of Music. Location scouting for the 1965 film began as early as 1963, and director Robert Wise's crew spent eleven weeks shooting on location around the city in 1964. Several of the film's most recognizable scenes were shot at real, still-visitable Salzburg sites: Mirabell Gardens, where the Pegasus Fountain appears in the "Do-Re-Mi" sequence; Residenzplatz, the setting for "I Have Confidence"; and St. Peter's Cemetery, used for the von Trapp family's dramatic escape scene.
