The gardens this tour walks through trace back to 1534, when Habsburg emperor Ferdinand I bought up a hillside vineyard beside Prague Castle and had it laid out as a formal Royal Garden — the first extension of the castle complex to spill outside its fortress walls. He brought in Italian Renaissance designers, the Genoese architect Paolo della Stella and the German-trained Bonifác Wohlmut, to lay it out in the Italian style that was then still a novelty this far north.
The garden's centerpiece, the Royal Summer Palace — better known as the Belvedere — was built between 1538 and 1560 to della Stella's design as a gift for Ferdinand's wife, Anne. With its arcaded ground floor and distinctive copper roof shaped like an upturned ship's hull, it's often singled out by architectural historians as one of the purest examples of Italian Renaissance building found anywhere north of the Alps, a genuine rarity in a city otherwise dominated by Gothic and Baroque.
Walk the grounds today and the Renaissance bones are still there, alongside a real bronze Singing Fountain whose falling water famously produces a faint musical ring as it strikes the basin below. Later Habsburg generations reworked parts of the garden in the heavier, more ornamental Baroque style that swept through Bohemia after the original 16th-century layout, so the walk genuinely spans both eras named in the tour's own title rather than just borrowing the label.
