Plzeň's brewing story starts in 1839, when the town's own burghers, frustrated with the quality of the beer being made locally, pooled resources to found what was then called the Burghers' Brewery. They recruited a Bavarian brewer, Josef Groll, who arrived in Plzeň and, using the region's remarkably soft water, Saaz hops grown near nearby Žatec, and a lighter-kilned Moravian barley malt, produced something nobody had tasted before: a clear, golden, bottom-fermented lager. Groll's first batch came off on 5 October 1842, and it was served to the public for the first time about a month later, on 11 November 1842.
That beer became Pilsner Urquell, and it did more than succeed locally — it created an entirely new beer style. Most lagers made anywhere in the world today, light-coloured and clear rather than the darker, cloudier ales that dominated before 1842, trace their technique back to what Groll brewed in Plzeň that year. The word "pilsner" is literally Plzeň's own name, carried into dozens of languages by a beer that started as one town's fix for a run of bad local brewing.
This all-inclusive private day trip covers the real working brewery where that history happened, with a genuine on-site Pilsner Urquell tasting rather than a bottled version shipped elsewhere, plus Plzeň's own Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, and an optional stop at the Techmania Science Center for travelers who want a hands-on science detour alongside the beer history.
