The chateau on this tour is Zbiroh, whose history as a fortified seat goes back to the start of the 13th century, making it one of the oldest aristocratic residences in Bohemia. Over the centuries it passed through genuinely significant hands: King Ottokar II of Bohemia, nicknamed the "Iron and Golden King" for his military strength and wealth, owned it and brought the Knights Templar there; Charles IV expanded it in the 14th century and visited regularly with his wife, Blanche of Valois; and in the 16th century, Rudolf II turned it into a Renaissance chateau, reportedly conducting alchemical experiments there in pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone. That three-emperor history — Charles IV, Sigismund, and Rudolf II — is why Zbiroh is sometimes called the "Castle of the Three Emperors."
Its most famous modern resident arrived centuries later. Alphonse Mucha, the Czech Art Nouveau painter known worldwide for his flowing, decorative posters, returned to his homeland in 1910 to begin what he considered his life's major work: a 20-canvas cycle called The Slavic Epic, depicting the history and mythology of the Slavic peoples, with individual paintings as large as roughly six by eight metres. From 1912 to 1928, Mucha lived and worked in Zbiroh's east wing, using one of its large halls as his studio for these monumental canvases. Visitors today can still see the Mucha Hall where he painted, and the chateau has preserved his former study and reception room as a named suite.
This private day trip pairs that real Mucha connection with the same genuine Pilsner Urquell brewery tasting offered on Pilsen trips from Prague, giving travelers both the city's defining industry and a quieter, less-visited piece of Czech art history in a single outing.
