The Powder Gate's real history starts with a replacement: the current tower dates to 1475, designed by architect Matěj Rejsek on the site of an older, run-down 13th-century gate locals had nicknamed "Ragged." It was meant as a grand, ceremonial entrance rather than a defensive structure, but the project stalled once King Vladislav II moved his court to Prague Castle in 1483, leaving the tower unfinished for centuries — it only gained its current neo-Gothic flourishes during a 19th-century restoration, after an earlier stint storing gunpowder gave it the name it carries today.
At the other end of the route, the Astronomical Clock is the real centerpiece of Old Town Square. Installed in 1410 (first documented on 9 October that year) by clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň working with Jan Šindel, a mathematics professor at Charles University, it's the oldest astronomical clock in the world still in working order. Every hour from 9am to 11pm, its Walk of the Apostles sends twelve wooden figures parading past two small windows while painted figures of Death, Vanity, Greed, and a Turk move on either side of the dial — a calendar disc with the zodiac signs was added around 1490.
Walking the stretch in between, from a medieval gate to a medieval clock, covers some of the densest real history in the Old Town, guided in whichever language — English or German — suits your group.
