Nuremberg carries two very different chapters of history side by side, and this private day trip is built around both. The medieval old town, encircled by its original city walls and anchored by the real Nuremberg Castle (Kaiserburg) looking down over the rooftops, reflects the city's centuries as one of the most important free imperial cities of the Holy Roman Empire, with half-timbered houses and Gothic churches largely reconstructed after WWII bombing to recreate the original medieval character.
In the 20th century, the Nazi Party deliberately chose Nuremberg as the staging ground for its annual propaganda rallies, building the vast Nazi Party Rally Grounds, including the Zeppelinfeld grandstand, and holding party rallies there from 1933 to 1938.
That symbolic choice is part of why Nuremberg was chosen again, for the opposite reason, after the war. The Nuremberg Trials, formally the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal, ran from 20 November 1945 to 1 October 1946 in Courtroom 600 of the city's Palace of Justice, a building the Allies picked partly because it had survived the war largely intact and had its own attached prison. Twelve further "Subsequent Trials," conducted solely by US military tribunals, continued in the same courtroom through 1949. This tour covers both the rally grounds and the trial sites honestly and without sensationalizing either — real, difficult history, presented plainly.
