The Macocha Abyss is the dramatic centrepiece of the Moravian Karst, a limestone cave region in the eastern Czech Republic. At 138.5 metres deep, it's the deepest sinkhole of its type (a collapsed cave roof, rather than a true vertical shaft) in Central Europe, and divers have traced the flooded passages below its surface lake to a combined depth of over 187 metres. A local legend gives the abyss its grim name, which translates roughly to "stepmother": the story tells of a cruel stepmother who tried to throw her stepson into the gorge, only to fall in herself.
The abyss sits directly above the Punkva Caves, and the two are explored as one connected system. Visitors walk through chambers decorated with stalactites and stalagmites built up over thousands of years, reaching the base of the Macocha Abyss itself, before boarding a real motorboat for a quiet ride along the underground Punkva River, its water a distinctive deep green from dissolved limestone, back out to daylight.
From there the day continues into Brno, the Czech Republic's second-largest city after Prague, with a real city walk through its historic centre — a genuinely different kind of Czech city than Prague's more famous streets, shaped by its own long industrial and academic history rather than tourism.
