The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape earned its 1996 UNESCO World Heritage listing for something unusual: it's not a single building or ruin, but an entire designed landscape, roughly 200 square kilometres of parkland, forests, lakes, and follies in South Moravia, shaped intentionally by one noble family over more than two centuries, making it one of the largest man-made landscapes anywhere in Europe.
That family was the House of Liechtenstein, which first gained a foothold in this part of Moravia at the end of the 14th century. From the 17th through the early 20th century, successive ruling princes of Liechtenstein reworked their southern Moravian holdings into a unified Baroque and later Romantic-English-style landscape, anchored by two real chateaus: Valtice Castle, designed as the princely family's main seat by the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in the early 18th century, and Lednice Castle, which became their summer residence as early as the 17th century and was later remodelled in a dramatic neo-Gothic style.
Beyond the architecture, this is also genuine South Moravian wine country — the region produces the great majority of the Czech Republic's wine — and this private day trip includes the option of a real vineyard tasting alongside the two UNESCO chateaus, giving travelers both the engineered landscape and the actual agricultural tradition that has always run alongside it.
