Kutná Hora isn't just a pretty day trip from Prague — it's a town whose entire historic core exists because of silver. From the 14th through the 16th century, its mines ranked among the largest in the world, and the wealth they generated funded a genuinely grand medieval town, one that the whole historic center was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, officially inscribed as "Kutná Hora: Historical Town Centre with the Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec."
The single clearest expression of that wealth is St. Barbara's Church, one of the most celebrated Gothic churches in Central Europe. Construction began in 1388 — fittingly dedicated to St. Barbara, patron saint of miners — but the church wasn't actually finished until 1905, its building history repeatedly interrupted across five centuries as the town's fortunes rose and fell with the silver trade. Walking its old town today, with its still-intact medieval street layout and well-preserved burgher houses, gives a genuine sense of just how much money once flowed through a town now better known to many visitors for its Bone Church than for the silver that built everything around it.
Traveling there by train rather than coach has its own real appeal: it's roughly an hour each way through the Czech countryside, and arriving into a smaller regional station rather than a tour-bus parking lot sets a different, more unhurried tone for exploring the town on foot at your own pace.
