The building most visitors call the "Royal Mint" in Kutná Hora is properly known as the Italian Court — Vlašský dvůr in Czech — and its name has a specific, real origin. In 1300, King Wenceslas II summoned Florentine banking experts to reform Bohemia's chaotic, decentralized coinage system, closing down the kingdom's scattered local mints and consolidating minting into one central operation at Kutná Hora, right beside the silver mines supplying the metal. The palace took its name from those Italian specialists who ran the new operation.
What they produced there, the Prague groschen, became one of the strongest and most trusted currencies in medieval Europe — silver coins struck in the Italian Court's workshops, known as smithies, arranged around a central courtyard, with the actual minting chamber called the "Preghaus." The coins' reliability mattered well beyond Bohemia's borders, and for centuries the Italian Court doubled as the real economic heart of the kingdom and, after a late-14th-century reconstruction, as a part-time royal residence whenever the king visited to oversee the mines that made it all possible.
Those mines themselves are the other half of this tour's real story. Kutná Hora's silver deposits were, during their medieval peak, among the richest in the world — rich enough to fund St. Barbara's Church and the town's entire wealthy medieval core. Descending into a real section of that mine network gives a genuinely different perspective on the town than seeing its surface monuments alone: this is where the actual raw material came from that turned a mining settlement into one of the most important towns in the Bohemian kingdom.
