Rückl Crystal's own history is a real family story stretching back further than its famous Nižbor location suggests. The Rückl family's glassmaking roots trace back to the 17th century, with the first glassworks actually carrying the family name established by Jan Rückl in 1846. It was his descendant, Antonín Rückl, who in 1903 set out to build an entirely new, purpose-built glassworks at Nižbor — deliberately sited next to the newly built railway line between Prague and Rakovník so finished crystal could reach markets quickly. The factory became known across Europe for crystal containing roughly 24% lead, a composition that gives Rückl pieces their particular weight and brilliance.
Like much of Czech industry, the glassworks was nationalized in 1945 and folded into the state-run Bohemian glassworks system under communism in 1965. It took the fall of communism to bring it back into family hands: in 1989, Antonín's great-grandson Jiří Rückl privatized the operation and re-founded it as an independent company, and in 2016 current owner Martin Wichterle took it over specifically to keep the historic glassworks running.
Pairing a visit here with Karlštejn Castle gives the day a genuinely lighter, craft-focused second half after the castle's heavier royal and religious history — watching real glassblowers and cutters at work in a factory that's been operating, on and off, for well over a century is a different kind of Bohemian tradition than the one on display inside Karlštejn's towers.
