Karlštejn Castle was never meant as a defensive stronghold in the ordinary sense — Charles IV founded it in 1348 specifically as a secure place to keep his most prized possessions: the Imperial Crown Jewels and his personal collection of holy relics. Construction moved quickly by medieval standards, and Charles himself stayed on site from 1355 to personally oversee the decoration of the chapels. The castle's centerpiece, the Chapel of the Holy Cross inside the Great Tower, was consecrated in 1365, and it's where the jewels and relics were actually kept — until the Hussite Wars broke out in 1420 and the treasures were removed for safekeeping, never to return to Karlštejn. They came back to Bohemia after the wars ended, in 1436, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross went on holding the Bohemian Crown Jewels until 1619.
The Great Tower itself remains the castle's dominant feature, a genuinely imposing stone keep built to be as close to impregnable as 14th-century engineering allowed, reflecting just how seriously Charles took the task of protecting what was stored inside. Walking through the royal chambers and the chapel today, it's worth remembering that this wasn't a residence built for comfort or show first — it was purpose-built security architecture for an emperor's most sacred and valuable possessions, with the comforts of a royal retreat added around that core purpose.
A half-day visit gives enough time to take in the castle's real highlights at an unhurried pace without turning the whole day into a single stop — a genuinely efficient way to see one of Bohemia's most historically significant buildings without committing a full day to it.
