The Royal Brewery of Krušovice carries a real royal connection in its name, not just its branding. Founded in 1581, the brewery was bought outright in 1583 by Emperor Rudolf II, after he reportedly tasted the local beer while out hunting nearby and liked it enough to purchase the entire operation for the Bohemian Crown — which is why the imperial crown still appears in the brewery's logo today. It changed hands again in 1685, to the Wallenstein family, and continued brewing through the centuries that followed; it's often described as the only Czech beer that was ever actually owned by the crown, a genuinely unusual pedigree among the country's many historic breweries.
Karlovy Vary itself, the day's other focus, has its own long history as a gathering point for European high society. Beyond its founding by Charles IV in the 14th century, the town's 19th-century heyday as a spa resort drew an extraordinary roster of real visitors — Goethe stayed here 13 separate times, and composers including Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, and Brahms all passed through, with Bach reportedly composing part of the Brandenburg Concertos during his own stay. The grand iron-and-stone colonnades built in that era, like the 132-meter Mill Colonnade designed by Viennese architect Josef Zítek between 1871 and 1881, still shelter the town's mineral springs today and remain some of the finest spa architecture anywhere in Europe.
Pairing a genuine 16th-century royal brewery with a spa town that hosted Goethe and Beethoven gives this day two authentically different angles on Bohemian history — one built on beer, the other on mineral water and 19th-century high society.
