Karlovy Vary's own origin story is tied to one figure: Emperor Charles IV. According to the town's own founding legend, Charles was hunting in the forests here when his hounds chased a deer into a hot spring, and he was struck enough by the discovery that he granted the settlement town privileges in 1370. The spring responsible, Vřídlo, is still the town's most dramatic feature today — a geyser of water at roughly 72°C (162°F) that shoots up to about 11 meters. By 2021, Karlovy Vary's spa architecture and springs had earned it, alongside other European spa towns, a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list under the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" designation.
Moser's own history started here too, in 1857, when Ludwig Moser opened a workshop polishing and engraving glass for the wealthy visitors already flocking to the spa town. The business grew quickly: Moser built his own glassworks nearby in 1893 and began producing a distinctively lead-free crystal, unlike most of the competition. His work drew serious attention — after an appearance at the Vienna World's Fair, Emperor Franz Joseph I granted him the right to design for the imperial court, and over the following years Moser's clients came to include Edward VII, the Shah of Persia, the Sultan of Turkey, and Pope Pius XI, earning the brand its lasting nickname, "Glass of Kings."
The real Grand Hotel Pupp, a stop on this tour, adds its own well-documented modern footnote: it served as a filming location for the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, standing in for the fictional Hotel Splendide in Montenegro. Between the genuine royal history behind Moser's crystal and the hot springs that built the town around it, this is a day that covers two real, very different kinds of Bohemian craftsmanship — one in glass, one in geology.
