About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, accompanied by a real local host, genuine Prague Castle and Strahov Monastery stops. This is a private tour for your group only, accompanied by a genuine local host. Real stops include Prague Castle, the Strahov Monastery, and genuine hidden-gem locations.

Strahov Monastery has real roots that go back further than most of Prague's Gothic landmarks. It was founded in 1143 by Bishop Jindřich Zdík together with Duke Vladislaus II, after the bishop returned from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land determined to bring the Premonstratensian order to Bohemia — making it one of the oldest continuously used monastic sites in the city.

Its real draw for most visitors today is the library, with more than 200,000 volumes spread across two ornately frescoed halls. The older Theological Hall was built between 1671 and 1679; the Philosophical Hall, with its soaring ceiling fresco, followed a century later between 1782 and 1784. After 1950 the collection was folded into the state Memorial of National Literature under Czechoslovakia's communist government, and it was only returned to the Premonstratensian order after the 1989 revolution.

Pairing a stop like this with a real local host, rather than a fixed script, is exactly how the hidden-gem half of this tour earns its name — small courtyards, overlooked viewpoints, and streets just a few minutes off the Royal Way that most short visits to Prague Castle never reach.
