The scenery on this day trip owes its shape to an unlikely source: volcanic activity. The Central Bohemian Uplands, České Středohoří, are one of the most geologically distinctive regions in the Czech Republic — not actual active volcanoes, but the eroded remains of volcanic cones, lava flows, and basalt intrusions from tens of millions of years ago, now left standing as a landscape of steep, isolated hills rising out of otherwise flat countryside.
One of those hills carries the ruins of Hazmburk Castle, known in German as Hasenburg, whose twin-towered silhouette is visible for miles in every direction — a real landmark on a genuinely striking natural feature, since the hill itself is an exhumed volcanic dyke of basalt rock surrounded by much older marine sedimentary rock from the Cretaceous period. Litoměřice, the historic town the tour also visits, has its own layered history, with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings reflecting its long role as the seat of a Catholic bishopric and the centre of a long-standing wine-producing district.
The day's centrepiece for most travelers, though, is simpler: a real, working family-run goat farm in this same volcanic countryside, where the format is genuinely hands-on, feeding and petting the goats, then tasting the farm's own goat cheese and milk, the kind of small rural operation found throughout the Bohemian countryside rather than a staged attraction built for tour buses.
