Every story on a route like this is local folklore and legend passed down through generations, not documented history — and a good guide will say so plainly rather than let a dramatic tale pass as verified fact. Prague's own ghost lore is unusually rich precisely because the Old Town and Jewish Quarter have barely changed shape in centuries, so the same cobbled corners that hosted a medieval execution or a plague burial are still standing, still walkable, still pointed out by name.
One of the best-known is the legend of the Iron Man of Prague, tied to a knight named Jáchym Berka who, the story goes, returned from war to false rumors of his fiancée's infidelity and killed her in a jealous rage — only to be cursed with her dying breath and turned to stone on the spot. Local legend holds the statue, which still stands at Mariánské náměstí (a later copy by the sculptor Ladislav Šaloun), comes to life once every hundred years to search for a kind-hearted woman willing to walk with him and lift the curse.
The Old Town Square area has its own tragic ghost in the White Lady, said to be the spirit of a clerk's teenage daughter who fell to her death in an unfinished basement near Kinský Palace and was quietly hidden in the building's foundations rather than properly buried — her ghost is said to still ask passersby for help finding her father. A short walk away, on Liliová Street near the former Church of St. Anne, local lore tells of a headless Templar knight, beheaded on the spot and said to still wander the street after dark. None of these can be verified as history, which is exactly what makes them legend worth telling on a walk like this.
