Český Krumlov Castle earns its reputation as the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, after Prague Castle, through sheer physical scope: 40 structures spread across five courtyards, built up over roughly five centuries of continuous use. Its origins go back to the 13th century — the first written record dates to 1253, when Count Vítek of Krumlov built an initial fortress on the rocky outcrop above a tight bend in the Vltava. The Rosenberg family, who inherited the estate in 1302, expanded it through the 14th century and gave it a thorough Renaissance makeover in the 16th, and later owners — the Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg families — layered on Baroque, Rococo, and Empire-era interiors that are still visible in the state rooms today.
The castle's tower, dating to the mid-13th century, remains the town's most recognizable landmark — climbing it (or simply taking in the grounds and gardens at ground level) gives a real sense of how the fortress has grown outward over the centuries rather than being built all at once. With real included lunch and castle admission as part of this visit, there's nothing extra to sort out on the day beyond deciding how much time to spend in each part of the grounds.
The optional stop afterward at Budweiser Budvar Brewery and Hluboká Chateau adds a genuinely different texture to the day — real Czech brewing heritage on one end, and a 19th-century chateau remodeled in a dramatic English Neo-Gothic style on the other, both a reasonable detour from Český Krumlov without doubling back toward Prague.
