The name "Budweiser" has a real, specific, and genuinely contested history, and this stop in České Budějovice is where it actually started. The town was founded in 1265 under its German name, Budweis, and brewing there is documented from close to that founding — "Budweiser" is simply the German adjective meaning "of Budweis." More than six centuries later, in 1876, American brewer Adolphus Busch, inspired by a trip through Bohemia, launched his own "Bohemian-style" lager in St. Louis and called it Budweiser too.
That overlap in names turned into one of the longest-running trademark disputes in commercial history — ongoing since 1907 and fought out in more than 100 court cases around the world. The practical result today is a genuine geographic split: the Czech brewer, Budweiser Budvar, holds the rights to the name "Budweiser" across most of Europe, while the American company (now part of AB InBev) holds it in North America. Elsewhere in the EU, the American beer has to be sold simply as "Bud," while Budvar sells into the US market under the name "Czechvar" instead.
Stopping in České Budějovice on the way to or from Český Krumlov gives you a look at the town where all of this genuinely began, before continuing on to Český Krumlov's own UNESCO-listed old town — a real pairing of brewing history and medieval townscape in a single long day from Prague.
